Distributed
Services
This layer contains distributed services for supporting
mobile sensor applications. We have identified
two services: Lookup Service and Information Service.
Since security involves many layers, we have a
separate task for that issue.
The
research performed in this workpackage has the
following objectives:
- To
develop algorithms and approaches for collaborative
signal processing and dependable information processing
in distributed sensor networks.
- To enhance our understanding of the global behaviour
of a self-organising system whose overall behaviour
is the collective local interaction among a large
number of small components and where the local actions
are solely based on limited local information.
One typical trait of sensor networks as they are
envisioned here is the redundancy of the information
gathering process. The task of the Information Service
in this is to leverage a wider aperture provided
by multiple sensors without drowning the end user
in redundant low-level data. For example, the temperature
in a certain room could be measured by a larger
number of temperature sensors in that room; however,
the reading of any one of them would be sufficient.
In other cases, an intelligent averaging process
might be required, in yet other cases, all sensor
data should be communicated. It is then the sensor
networks task to transport such sensor information
in whatever form to wherever it is needed. The Lookup
Service will take care of this "point of retrieval"
which could be a fixed, possibly tethered location,
e.g., a gateway to a monitoring station, known to
the sensor network over a longer period of time.
